Sonatas & Scenes represents the highlights from my 30-year engagement with contemporary Danish music.
It is composed partly of works that submit the sonata form where different processes and tonal spaces succeeds one another. In addition, many of the pieces incorporate more or less apparent visual or theatrical elements, either in the circus-like acrobatics in Per Nørgård’s “Solo in Scèna”, in the intense bowing pressure to obtain the sound of Tibetan monks chanting, in Carsten Fundal’s “Figure and Ground Study” or in the actual spinning of the cello in Kim Helwig’s “Movements”.
